Air Cadets Gliding Squadron Soaring High With Yorkshire Gliding Club
On Saturday 5th September cadets aged between 16 and 18 from 645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, RAF Topcliffe, helped the staff and visitors of the Yorkshire Gliding Club open day at Sutton Bank. The open day was open to all with the main aim of encouraging more people to get involved with gliding. As well as all different types of gliders being launched throughout the day, there were vintage cars on show, stalls and competitions for everyone to get involved with.
645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron who were asked to help on the day, are made up of adult volunteers who give up their weekends to train young cadets to fly the Grob 109b Vigilant Motorglider. All air cadets aged 13-20 have the opportunity to fly and aged 16, can fly solo. Graham Eveson, Chairman of the Yorkshire Gliding Club commented: “It is known that the young pilots with 645 Squadron are very talented, well disciplined individuals and I would be delighted if they would get invoved with Yorkshire Gliding Club. Their help during the day was hugely appreciated by all at the club”
The cadets were lucky enough to be given a flight each in the Slingsby T21, a very old open cockpit glider which the air cadets used to train in many years ago.

Cadet Kiera Chapman prepares for launch in a T.21 Glider
Kiera Chapman aged 16 and one of the 645 Sqn cadets commented: “It was amazing! Putting the biggles hat and goggles on was a bit weird at first, but taking to the air and flying at a mere 30 knots was fantastic; definitely different to the powered gliders we fly at Topcliffe”
Jordan Cameron, an instructor from 645 Sqn who accompanied the cadets commented: “At 645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron we’re always keen to help out both the community and similar organisations alike. Being asked to support the Yorkshire Gliding Club was an honour mainly due to the fact some of our own staff have been associated with YGC in years gone by; Our Commanding Officer was the previous chairman! We look forward to building a strong rapport with the Yorkshire Gliding Club and seeing more of our cadets develop a taste for ‘real’ engineless gliding!”

1324 (Hawker Blackburn) Squadron - Air Cadets on a High!
The Brough Air Cadet unit, 1324 (Hawker Blackburn) Squadron ATC, held it’s highlight Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation evening last Friday,12th June 2009 at BAE Systems at Brough.
The event is kindly hosted annually by BAE Systems and was attended by cadets of the squadron, staff and committee members together with parents and long standing friends of the unit. The Guest of Honour was Group Captain Dean Andrew OBE RAF, a former Air Cadet of the Squadron who in years gone by was a winner of many of the awards made that evening. After an enjoyable meal, cadets presented a drill display to the obvious enjoyment of all present. Awards were presented to cadets for success achieved over the previous twelve months and the busy evening closed after an illuminating presentation by Group Captain Andrew on the achievements of the Royal Air Force, at it’s base in Basra.
Cadet winners on the night were:
Warrant Officer’s Award – Corporal Richard Challis
Leading Cadet Award – Cadet Ryan Kilgallon
Staff Cadet Award – Sergeant Jennifer Ward
Award for Best Attendance – Sergeant Chris Grigg
Sport Award – Cadet Robin Dawson
Cadet of the Year Award - Cadet Robin Dawson
and
NCO of the Year Award – Flight Sergeant Jon Hill-Best
Commanding Officer of the unit, Flight Lieutenant Michael Bower said, “It was a great pleasure to see so much support for the young people present and I thank BAE at Brough for their generosity in sponsoring the event. I congratulate all this years winners but in truth, every one of our young people adds to the life of the unit and achieves in their own way, whether it be in studies, flying, modelling, sport, adventure training, making new friends or some other form of development. The year ahead holds great promise and many of our younger cadets will be challenging for the awards next year, I’m sure. So go for it!”
The Squadron is also on the lookout for volunteer adult staff members and opportunities are available in a range of roles. Units are staffed by officers of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Training Branch, Air Training Corps Adult Senior Non-Commissioned Officers and Civilian Instructors.

Junior Leaders - the course that’s a must to be on
F/Sgt Reeve (1953 Knaresborough) and F/Sgt Hopkins (58 Harrogate) Squadrons are two of the last 60 students remaining on this year's Junior Leaders course - less than half of those which started back in September. So far the course has taken them across the country to various reaches of Catterick Garrison, STANTA in Norfolk, RAF Honington and a farm in Skipton for 24 days of training split over 8 weekends. 'So far, we've done it all' says F/Sgt Reeve, 'Intense leadership training, L85 weapons training, Section battle drills with blank rounds, radio voice procedure, navigation - in short, scaled down training for us to function as an RAF Regiment squadron' 'Of course, it hasn't all been comfortable' says F/Sgt Hopkins. 'The times when lying out on sentry duty at 3am, or sleeping in the snow in the middle of January are very testing - and that's when you have to work really hard to motivate your section and be inspirational, no matter how gruelling the conditions are. It's been a real eye opener.' The course will end in April, when the students will undergo 9 days of testing at STANTA in Norfolk, which will include a 7 day field exercise. Afterwards, students attain a ILM certificate in Team leading, the equivalent leadership qualification of an RAF corporal, and a maroon lanyard. If you are interested in applying for the next JL course, check the routine orders around March or April, or check www.juniorleaders.net for more information.

2487 (Easingwold) Squadron - Rock it Ball Fame Spreads
Word of 2487 (Easingwold)’s Rock-It-Ball expertise is spreading through the Air Cadet organisation. 1312 (Southend) Squadron, having heard of the waves being made by the two Easingwold teams invited England International Cdt. Sgt Tom Hildreth down to Southend to introduce Rock-It-Ball to their cadets. Arriving at the sports hall on the Sunday morning for the two hour session, Tom was amazed to see almost 70 cadets lined up and raring to go. The Southend Cadets were given a short introduction following which they had 10 minutes to practice the basic skills. They were then told the rules and 12 players were selected to play a demonstration match. Tom added staff into the mix to make 70 players and divided the players into two groups of 35 with each group having seven teams of five players and playing in half the sports hall. For the next 90 minutes the cadets and staff played game after game in their two groups with some staff and NCOs trying their hands at officiating. Tom was very impressed with the Southend cadets. " What a great bunch and the standard of play rose quickly through the session. I saw some great blocking, movement and shooting. There are some talented players here."
Feedback from the exhausted Southend Squadron was exceptionally positive with all of them amazed at what a work-out they had had. Josephine Fisher summed it up, "Its the best sport ever and that’s coming from someone who hates PE with a passion" and Jodie Cottis commented," It was the most fun I’ve had in ages to be honest. It was brilliant. Lets do it again!!!!!!"
CI Stirling Harpur who, with his daughter, Cadet Cpl Ahnya Harpur, extended the invitation to Tom was delighted with the session. "I’ve known about Rock It Ball for a while and knew the cadets would enjoy it, but I had no idea just how much. What a BUZZ!! We’re all looking forward to our next session - and to playing Easingwold." Southend are keen to play a regional level match to get a national ATC champion for 2009!

FLYING THE NEST
Friday 27th February 2009 saw the last day in ATC uniform for 2394 (East Cleveland) Squadron’s Cadet Warrant Officer James HOOTON.
CWO Hooton who is nearly 20 has been a cadet with the Redcar Based Squadron since the age of 13 and has achieved practically everything that a cadet could wish to do.
Qualifying through examination to Staff Cadet Level, obtaining his B Tech certificate and Radio Communicator Badge a Gliding Scholarship to Silver Standard and over 1000 hours as a millennium volunteer.CWO Hooton was also the northern representative as Lord Lieutenants Cadet for North Yorkshire (Cleveland) during 2008. He was an active member of Redcar Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association.
He was fortunate in obtaining both an ATC and RAFA Flying scholarship culminating in the award, early this year, of his Private Pilots Licence. He flies for pleasure with the St George Flying Club based at Durham/Tees Valley Airport but unfortunately his height has prevented him from becoming a pilot in the RAF.
At work he is an Assistant Shift Manager for Sainsbury but has left the ATC to follow his ambitions to fly commercially and has become a member of the Civil Air Patrol and is at present a second pilot on twin engine Beach craft flying Fisheries Protection Officers up and down the East Coast and also acting as recovery pilot for commercial single engine planes hired from the flying school.
An active member of the Radio Training Section during his service he helped the Wing Radio Assistant (Training) on many occasions and Mr Fowles has stated “that it will be a long time before I can get anyone as good as James. Anything that he said he would do, her would, and it would be well done. A hard cadet to replace”
At his final parade, James, resplendent in his new flying uniform, was thanked by Flt Lt Steve Woods, Officer Commanding on behalf of the Squadron for his commitment to the Air Cadet Organisation over the years.

Golden Wings for Cadet Corporal Gilbert
Sixteen year old Corporal Michael Gilbert of 58 (Harrogate) Squadron broke all the
records when he won not only his silver wings for gliding but also his gold wings
for advanced glider training at RAF Linton on Ouse this month.
When Michael’s training
was interrupted by the ice and snow before Christmas he began to doubt whether he
would ever complete his Gliding Scholarship course but he battled bouts of illness
to go solo, winning his Silver Wings in a record time of only five hours ten minutes.
‘It is quite a strange feeling to know that you can fly an aircraft solo before
you
are even old enough to drive a car’, admitted Michael, who is studying for his GCSEs
at Ripon Grammar School.
Michael’s flying skills were acknowledged when he was sent
to complete his Advanced Glider Training with 642 VGS at RAF Linton on Ouse after
Christmas, again breaking all Air Training Corps records by qualifying after only
1 hour and 40 minutes in the air, and being presented with his coveted Gold Wings
as soon as he touched down by the Commanding Officer of 642 VGS, Squadron Leader
Johnston. ‘642 VGS made me feel very welcome,’
Michael enthused. ‘They focused all their efforts on completing my training that
day. It really is a brilliant course to experience during your time in the Air Training
Corps.’
Squadron Leader Shirley Tune, Commanding Officer of 58 (Harrogate) Squadron
Air Training Corps, is proud of Corporal Gilbert’s achievement. ‘His Gold Wings are
the first I’ve seen awarded in 16 years of involvement with the Air Training Corps
in Knaresborough and Harrogate,’ she said whilst congratulating him.
But Michael isn’t content to leave it at that. He added, “I’m now looking forward
to applying for a Flying Scholarship when I turn 17.”

1953 (Knaresborough) Squadron - Farmers evening
On the 14th of November 1953 (Knaresborough) squadron had a farmer themed evening
which meant getting out the Wellington's, bits of straw and the flat caps to replace
the berets. This was all in aid of Children In Need and we had some convincing farmers.
With Cadet Devane and Cadet Hall taking the prize for best fancy dress. Cadet Black
coming in a some what un-farmer like outfit (his baby suit) was highly amusing and
slightly different.
There were farmer themed activities such as who could put a boiler
suit on the quickest which created some interesting performances, tractor races,
guess the farm animal by the noise it makes (which was more difficult than we thought)
and a lot more. With Cadet Corporal Ackerman and Cadet Sergeant Taylor, being the
quickest in and out of a boiler suit and Cadet Corporal Smythe, Cadet Cryer and Cadet
Bell being the best at farm yard knowledge. However with that all over, it was time
for some food! With CI Watson and CI Healey bringing along cheese, bread and pickled
onions which as Cadet Warrant Officer Rawlings found out could not all be eaten at
once! Cadet Kirkwood attempted a sponsored silence, attempted being the operative
word, however she managed to raise over £100 for children in need which was a great
effort well done. It was an excellent evening with everyone making the effort to
dress up, even the staff. However Flt Lt Ian Bottomley must have regretted his choice
of straw which caused him to be sneezing all night, whilst we all wondered what was
on the straw or what had relieved it self on it and where he had got it from? It
was a thoroughly enjoyed by all and a big thanks goes to Cadet Corporal Lofthouse
and Cadet Corporal Stuehmeyer for organising the evening and making it such an entertaining
evening. The icing on the cake was that the squadron raised nearly £90 for Children
In Need.

Wing Commander M Scholes MBE DFM RAF Rtd

It is with deep regret that we announce that Wing Commander M Scholes MBE DFM RAF
Rtd died suddenly on 11th November 2008. Malcolm was Wing Admin Officer at Central
and East Yorkshire Wing from 1979 to 1991 and after retirement was appointed the
Honorary President of 58 (Harrogate) Squadron.
In 1939 at the outbreak of World War
2 he joined 127 (City of Wakefield) Squadron, Air Defence Cadet Corps. On his 18th
birthday (17th October 1942) he joined the Royal Air Force. There was no shortage
of applicants for pilot training but, at that time, with the introduction of four
engine bombers, there was a severe shortage of Flight Engineers. He applied, and
in less than a year was on operations flying in Halifax and Lancaster bombers. He
joined 35 Pathfinder Squadron and wore the coveted golden eagle Pathfinder badge
on the lapel of his left breast pocket. Whereas normal bomber crews undertook a tour
of 30 operational missions the Pathfinder force were committed to 45. Malcolm's logbook
shows 65 operations completed. His aircraft was hit by flak on eleven occasions,
he was involved in two crash landings and shot down by an ME 109F night fighter.
He
was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. All this and he was still two weeks away
from his 20th birthday! Commissioned in 1944 he went on to see service in Palestine,
Iraq, Egypt, Cyprus, Malta and Libya where he was the last Commandant of Tobruk.
He played a major part in the final withdrawal of the RAF from Palestine by leading
a convoy of 110 vehicles from that country to an RAF base in Egypt through a very
hostile environment. This was recognised by the award of an MBE. Malcolm saw peace
time service in the RAF until his retirement in 1979. His final year in the RAF was
as Station Commander at RAF Biggin Hill. As the Wing Admin Officer for Central and
East Yorkshire Wing, Malcolm worked hard for the cadets, his efforts frequently well
beyond what could be reasonably expected. Wing Commander Ray Kidd, President of Central
and East Yorkshire Wing said "I worked with Malcolm as a Wing Staff Officer, OC Wing
and Wing Chairman and in my opinion, he was an outstandingly good Wing Admin Officer
who did much for the Wing - certainly I learnt a great deal from him."

2487 Make History (Again!)
2487 (Easingwold) squadron continue to be at the forefront of the fast-moving world of Rock-It-Ball. The sport, which was developed in North Yorkshire and launched just over two years ago, has now reached the point where a North East regional league has been established to cater for the demand from clubs wanting to play competitive fixtures. The Easingwold squadron has been playing Rock-It-Ball since it was introduced by Cdt. Sgt Tom Hildreth and they seized the opportunity to field a team in the inaugural league. Such has been the impact of Rock-It-Ball among the Easingwold cadets that they fielded a squad of 14 players from which had to select a playing squad of 10 for each game.
Playing as 2487 Jets the squad featured a number of experienced players but this was also the first competitive experience for a large number of inexperienced players in the Jets’ squad. The Jets made history not only by being one of the founder teams in this first Rock-It-Ball League but also by featuring in the first game. They were perhaps a little unlucky to be drawn against one of the strongest teams and the favourites for the title – HellCats.
Managed and coached by CI Carl Alsop and Cdt. Sgt. Tom Hildreth, both England internationals, the Jets fielded a mix of experience and new players in their first game. The Jets did themselves proud and the new players made great strides during the course of the day’s games with cadets Alex Nottage and Amy Tester making a particular impact. However the name on everyone’s lips at the end of the day was that of Jess Leach. Although small in size Jess grew in confidence and stature as time went on and she impressed all with both her defensive and offensive play.
Although the Jets have a very strong starting five Carl and Tom took a long term view and felt it important that all members of the squad get competitive experience. As Carl explained: “we have such interest in Rock-It-Ball that next year we expect to be able to field two strong teams in the League and we are working towards giving our players enough experience. Tom and I are both delighted and impressed with how these guys came on and the team will just get stronger and stronger.” As if to prove the point the Jets played a friendly against another strong team, the HellFighters, and gained a very creditable draw, attracting a lot of favourable comment from their opponents.
Tom had the final word. He said: “We had a difficult start with games against such strong and experienced teams but are delighted with how the players developed and we are looking forward to the next round in a couple of weeks. We’d also love to have the opportunity to play against other squadrons and maybe see a dedicated ATC tournament.”

On Saturday 29th March at the Squadron's annual presentation night he was able to say his goodbyes. Wing Adventure Training History
To all who took the trouble to supply me with stories and photographs of cadet adventure training activities, my sincere thanks. Unfortunately the response from many quarters can only be described as tardy, with a result that there was insufficient information to make a serious attempt at completing a book.
None-the-less it is hoped that further progress will be made in due course. The project is on hold for the time being as I am about to write-up the history of the ATC nationally and this will be all time consuming until finished. The projected date for completion is 2011 when the Corps will celebrate its 70th anniversary.
Please do not be deterred from sending adventure training material to me, as all information will be held on file until further progress can be made.
Thank you
Yours sincerely
